End of an Era

It has been a long time since I gave any updates on my progress. Actually it is almost 3 months! There have been a lot of developments on my personal front which was the main cause of this much delayed update. My progress has slowed down considerably too. I was hoping to be at 140 lbs by the end of this year with 7% body fat. That seems like a dream that will not be fulfilled this year. I will not even be able to meet the 140 lb goal let alone the body fat %. So what happened to me over the last 3 months?

I have been in the US for more than 8 years now! I loved every moment that I was here, starting from the early struggling days of my MS to my current stable job state of today. However even before coming to US, I promised to myself that I will be back in India after gaining 5 years of work experience in US. Now that the goal has been realized, it is time to move back to India. So in the last 3 months I have been working towards the goal of moving back to India. My company has been kind enough to offer me a job in Bangalore. So I have been filling forms, cleaning up stuff here in US, spending a lot of time with friends and basically doing everything necessary to travel half way around the world, back to India, to live there permanently (or so I think :).

I am still in US, but in the coming days I will be travelling to various places and be in India towards the end of January, 2011. So no more updates for a long time again. My last workout day at a gym in US was last thursday 12/09/2010. I have been skipping workouts a lot lately because of work and also because I was spending a lot of time with friends playing tennis and ping-ping and was really tired to do any more workouts during the week days. Also I did not take good care about what I was eating. Which means my body fat kept on increasing.

However, not everything is so gloomy. I was able to reach 135 lbs finally. Which is an unimaginable feat for me even though I am a bit fat now. Here are the latest numbers and graphs (for the whole year)

  • Weight: 134.8 lbs
  • Fat %: 12.46%
  • Lean Mass: 118 lbs

My fat % is still where it was at the beginning of this year. But I gained 10 lbs! Which I think is a great achievement for an ectomorph like me. Not sure how well I can continue this trend when I move to India, but I will try my best!

  1. Nice to see an update from you Chandan. I havent updated in a long time because I have stopped my workouts for the past three months due to various reasons. Aside from congratulating you on your progress (which is really good in my opinion), I admire your resolve to return to India - I have heard a lot of people speak about returning to India after x years but they never do - its nice to see somebody actually do it. Whats more - Bangalore is my hometown - so it feels all the more nice to hear it mentioned. I wish you luck and hope you will be able to continue your weight gain progress there as well - Bangalore has all the facilities when it comes to gyms. I am sure you wont have trouble with that. Good luck and keep posting!

  2. Hey Skinny guy, sorry to hear that you stopped your workouts. Hopefully you will be back to gym soon.

Thank you! Yeah it is a bold decision to go back to India, but it is not really a tough one especially because I decided about it a long time ago. I have heard a lot of people even my friends who said they will return to India, but their dates keep moving or never happen.

Oh Bangalore is your hometown? That is great! May be you can answer a couple of questions that I have. Can you get lactose free milk in bangalore? Will I be able to find whey protein powder?

  3. Sure Chandan - I can help you with whatever I know of Bangalore now (its been about 3 years since I left Bangalore - I am in the US now) - but I used to regularly buy whey protein from these small time importers - I used to buy ON whey (the big 10 lb bag and the 5 lb bin) and a variety of EAS products. You do have a lot of sport supplement stores around Bangalore especially South Bangalore (Jayanagar, JP Nagar etc) and East Bangalore (Indiranagar etc). About lactose free milk, I dont know since I never looked for it then but I am sure it must be available now. If you want any other information, please feel free to write to me at transcend.skinny@gmail.com - my real name's Sridhar BTW :) I hope you have planned to continue your weight gain and keep posting your progress here. Good luck with everything!

  4. Awesome Sridhar. Whey will do for now :). I will scout around for some lactose free milk too. I definitely intend to continue to gain weight, but I am losing a lot of weight now because of all the work involved in packing, cleaning, moving, meeting friends and relatives etc. I will start over again in Feb 2011.

Stats for Oct 2009

So it has been a month since I started bulking up. How am I doing so far? Here are the raw numbers Exercises Squats: 170 lbs, 8 reps Deadlifts: 185 lbs, 10 reps Bench Press: 110 lbs, 4 reps Pull ups: Body weight + 25 lbs, 7 reps Overhead Press: 75 lbs, 6 reps I am doing well in all exercises except bench press. The exercise that is already closest to my goal for end of december is my pull-ups. I can already do 7 reps with 25 lbs hanging off my waist! You can check out my previous post for the goals I have set. Body weight and fat Weight: 120.8 lbs Fat %: 12.2% I am able to add weight as expected. But my body fat % shot up too much. My goal for end of december was to weight 125 lbs at 12% body fat. But I am already over the limit for my body fat %. So I have to lower it and at the same time increase my weight. Very unlikely. I might have to revise my goals, but I will see how it goes and hope to make better predictions for my next bulking phase. It is not at all easy to ke...

The Skinny Guy Diet

A few friends and neighbours have been asking me for advice on diet. Unfortunately I am not in a position to propose a diet that works for everyone. I have experimented with myself with a variety of diets during bulking and cutting phases. Some worked some failed. But in the end I am more knowledgeable than when I started, but I don't think I have the silver bullet. But more importantly I have information about diets that works for me. And may be more generally it may work for other skinny folks. So in today's post I just want to layout my eating habits in the hope that it might help other skinny guys out there. To start off, I have most recently switched away from my 6 meals a day hogging to a more reasonable 3 meals a day with an optional snack. Gone are the days when I tried to stuff myself with food whether I was hungry or not. Those medium size meals every 3-4 hours were just not doing it for me. I always felt full and bloated. Was becoming more lethargic and was gainin...

The Big Switch: Strength Training to Muscle Mass Training

I have so far been training for strength without giving any though to the muscle mass. My aim was to do 3x5 benchpress, rows with 1x my body weight, squat with 1.5x and deadlift with 2x. I have reached all my goals except for deadlift goal. So now that I have enough strength I want to switch my training to build muscle mass. Another reason is because I am getting bored with the strength training and my central nervous system seems to be getting taxed heavily for too long. Switching to muscle mass training means nothing more than reducing the weights to 80% instead of 90 to 95% and then doing 8 to 10 reps instead of 3 to 6 reps. I am not going to completely switch to muscle mass training. I plan to do strength training one week and muscle mass training the next week. Here is my plan Week 1: 3 x 8 with 80% 1RM Week 2: 6 x 4 with 90% 1RM Week 3: 3 x 9 with 80% 1RM Week 4: 7 x 4 with 90% 1RM Week 5: 3 x 10 with 80% 1RM Week 6: 8 x 4 with 90% 1RM At the end of the 6 weeks and ass...
